The Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance

The Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance is a global initiative that aims to drive private investments into climate change mitigation and adaptation actions in developing countries, by developing implementation-ready projects that address both investors’ and recipient countries’ needs. Inaugurated in May 2014, the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance supports the identification and piloting of cutting edge climate finance instruments with the potential for large scale application from proposals gathered from private, public, and civil society organizations from around the world. Analytical and secretariat work of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance is funded by the UK Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), and the U.S. Department of State. Climate Policy Initiative serves as Secretariat, and in collaboration with Bloomberg New Energy Finance, leads the analysis of proposed instruments, drawing on the expertise of Lab members and additional financial and investment leaders as appropriate.

Successful grads include NanoRidge Materials, which produces carbon nanotubes to make metal alloys 10 times stronger than steel, and Hydro Green Energy, which produces hydro-electricity using the energy generated not by a dam but by the natural flow of a river or stream.
